My Most Anticipated Films of 2021
A year go, I wouldn't have thought that I'd be sitting here now in January 2021, still waiting to see The Eternals or No Time To Die yet here we are. 2020 was a wild year, but very tame one for the box office. With the Covid-19 pandemic closing cinemas across the globe, many of the years biggest films have now moved to 2021 - which in other words means 2021 is STACKED with high profile films.
We all have our most anticipated lists, so I thought I'd share with you the films I'm most excited to see in the coming year! Apologies in advance for the glaring omissions.
RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON
Disney's animation studio has been on a roll this past decade, producing quality film after quality film, and this one looks to be in the same vein as all those other great animated flicks. We've known about this film since D23 in 2019, and I've been really interested in how Disney are going to bring this story to life - dragons, warrior's, and a south-east Asia backdrop all add to the film's pull. Granted I wasn't a fan of the trailer, but it's still giving me all the good vibes (similar to Moana which I love), and I have faith in their animation studio to come up with yet another animated classic.
Raya and the Last Dragon releases in the UK in March 2021.
NO TIME TO DIE
James Bond always draws in the glamour and excitement, and I know I'm not the only one who can't wait to see the latest instalment in the franchise. Not only is it "Bond 25", it is also Daniel Craig's last outing as 007 meaning you know it's going to be a fitting, emotional swan-song for who some consider to be among the very best Bond's ever. The trailers have been exhilarating, and Rami Malik looks like compelling villain from the little we've seen of his character. We know James Bond isn't in active service at the start of the film, as a lot has changed since the events of Spectre...but I'm all in on what is sure to be an action-packed feast! No Time To Die releases in the UK in April 2021
THE CONJURING: THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT
The first Conjuring film for me is one of the best horror films of the last 20 years. The scares were genuine and well earned, it had a perfect level of eeriness, an amazing sound design, and visually very well shot. Who can forget that "clap" scene - chills! But what's equally impressive is the way Warner Bros have managed to turn Conjuring into its own franchise - a "Conjuring-verse" - with multiple sequels and spin-off films which have been successful in their own right. This year, the third instalment in Conjuring series proper will be released, with Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprising their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren, and I cannot wait to delve into this universe once again...and be scared shitless too!The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It releases in the UK in June 2021
SPIDERMAN 3
We've heard all sorts of crazy rumours in recent weeks regarding Sony's yet untitled third Spiderman film, and the more we learn, the more excited I get for this film. I liked the first two Spiderman films within the MCU, and I always look forward to seeing Tom Holland in the suit making jokes and doing spidey things. But the rumours of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield coming back, along with a host of other characters from previous incarnations of Spiderman, this multi-verse crossover looks to be just the type of madness I need to see. We also know the film will tie into a larger story-arch which includes WandaVision and Doctor Strange: In The Multiverse of Madness which makes this story even more intriguing.
Spiderman 3 releases in the UK in December 2021
I mean do I really need to justify this? It's Godzilla vs King Kong - WTF guys!? Ever since this crossover was announced I've been so hyped to see the film, and it's one year delay hasn't lowered any of my excitement. I've really enjoyed all the Monster-Verse films so far, and thought the last Godzilla film perfectly set-up the showdown between two of cinemas greatest titans. I assume there will be a bigger bad which will make Godzilla and Kong team up eventually, but I just cannot wait to see these two monsters go head to head. I'm team Godzilla, but I hope the filmmakers have the balls to pick an actual winner instead of ending their fight in a stalemate...we all need closure dammit. I really hope audiences go out and see the film on the big screen, something I'm sure we're all looking forward to after the year we've just had.
Godzilla vs Kong releases in the UK in May 2021
There are a ton more films I could've chosen, but like I said at the start - 2021 is a stacked year. A couple of honourable mentions include Mission Impossible 7, Halloween Kills, Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Suicide Squad, Death on the Nile, and many more!
2021 is going to come with a lot of the same challenges as the year just gone, but I really hope cinema makes the comeback it deserves. I've really missed the cinema experience this past year, and cannot wait to see 2021's best the way the filmmakers intended...on the big screen.
