First Year Uni, Part "Societies"

There are probably 3 main aspects that make up student life:
1. The course
2. The nightlife

and lastly...

3. Sports clubs/societies

For me, the societies that I have joined have been a big part of my student life. As a student who lives at home, I found it hard to make immediate friends, meaning joining societies was a way for me to meet new people and make friends. In the end, this year I've managed to attend 2 societies regularly, and I am so glad to say that I've had- the most awesome time attending them. The 2 societies I'm talking about are the DMU Bollywood Dance society and the Krishna Consciousness Society (KCsoc).

DMU Bollywood Dance Society
While looking at the list of societies on the DSU website, I was filled with utter joy when I saw that DMU had a Bollywood dance society. I had just taken up dance earlier in 2014 and wanted to continue it at university as it was something I really enjoyed. When I saw 3 of the members perform at the matriculation event, I was in awe of how good the performance was and couldn't wait to join!! :D

So the Wednesday classes started and from the start, I knew I would be a regular attendee. At first the classes were quite big with a lot of people trying it out, which made it a bit more difficult for the committee to teach. But I knew that once class sizes got a bit lower and regulars started going, it would end up being as good as it has turned out to be...simply AWESOME!!! No matter what mood I'm in when I come to dance, I have always left with a huge smile on my face. We learnt 5 wonderfully choreographed songs this year, my favourite definitely being Radha. I got to perform twice during the year, both being wonderful experiences. Our first performance took place at Vishram Ghar, where we performed for the elderly at their Diwali party. It was a wonderful experience while it felt so good putting a smile on faces of the residents :) :) As term 2, and also classes drew to a close, we had one final performance at Hindu society's flagship event...NAINA 2015!!! The build up, preparation and rehearsals were great and I couldn't wait to get out and perform. By the time the performance over, it went so quick that I just wanted to go out and do it all again haha. Ngl, I think we smashed our performance!! :D Although I didn't actually perform in the opening section to Mast Magan, it was easily my favourite part of the whole performance, the execution was simply amazing!!

So now dance is over for the year and it sucks, I mean what do I do with my Wednesdays now lol? I've had an amazing time though. I continued my new found hobby of Bollywood dance and more importantly, I made some great friends :) I've applied to be on the committee next year so hopefully I'll be successful. I cant wait for next year and the memories it'll bring...by far my favourite society :) #LaDanceFamilia

Oh just a couple of special mentions

1. Devina...our choreographer. Dance would literally not be possible without her. She has choreographed some amazing routines this year (my favourite being the elegant Mast Magan) and deserves huge credit for her contribution and commitment to the society!! Also a wonderful person :)

2. Jaya...our outgoing president. She has done a superb job in leading this society, what can I say..thank you so much!! Love her positivity and fondness for dance...her bubbly personality will be missed next year :)

Krishna Consciousness Society
Well what can I say, it has been a wonderful journey with KCsoc this year. During the freshers fair, in the crowd of students I spotted a stall and was intrigued of what "KCsoc" was all about. I spoke to Reena that day and she was so enthusiastic about it. She had said there would be lots of deep discussions (and also free food hehe) so I had to try it out. So I went to the first session which was entitled "What would you do if you had 24 hours to live". The sessions was great and I had learnt some valuable tips and lessons. So every week I kept on going, and going, and going, each time learning something new whilst also being able to express my own views on topics that I don't really get to talk about. KCsoc was a hit for me and I've loved going there this year.

The topics and discussions have always been so intriguing. I've come out from each session having learnt so much. My favourite sessions to name a few have been:
  • What would you do if you had 24 hours to live?
  • Google vs God
  • Vegetarianism
  • Love vs Lust
The first session taught me to pursue what I want to achieve now, as one day it will be to late, while the vegetarianism debate taught me to be more compassionate towards living enetities, while also learning being veggie can be quite healthy for the body. One thing that I really liked about KCsoc is the atmosphere. From the very first session, the committee told us that they wanted to promote a family feel at KCsoc, and its for this family atmosphere that I've really enjoyed attending. Everyone in the society is soo welcoming and friendly, you never feel alone when you go there. They make you feel part of the KCsoc family and its an incredible feeling. I've made some great friends and KCsoc this year, and hope to make even more next year. Its a one of a kind society and I always recommend it to my other friends, both at DMU and at other university's.

KCsoc has always been the perfect end to my Wednesdays this year. I've had a truly wonderful time meeting some truly wonderful, like minded people, having some awesome discussions and enjoying delicious food lols :D KCsoc maybe over for this year, but I truly cant wait for what it has in store for the next!!

Special mention has got to go too the brilliant Ravi. Been amazing throughout the year delivering what have been some awesome, and funny sessions...KCsoc will definitely not be the same without him next year!!

To end this blog post (sorry I know its kinda long...well done for making it through), just want to say that anyone who goes/is going to uni, definitely take some time out and join a society. You'll meet some great people and make some wonderful friends, and have awesome time doing something you love with others that do too!!
