Committee Life

I find myself oddly not knowing where to begin, I mean there's literally so much to cover.

Ok I'll get the obvious out of the way - It's safe to say being a part of the DMU Bollywood Dance Committee this year has been one of the most AMAZING experiences I have had!!

Last year I regularly attended the society and absolutely loved it, so much so that I applied to be on the committee. Thankfully I succeeded and was given the role of Secretary. I couldn't wait for this year to start and the memories I was about to make...and it turned out to be better than I could have imagined.

Secretary Life

So secretary life, it's turned out to be more rewarding than I initially thought. I've been honest about the fact that my role has the least responsibilities meaning sometimes I've questioned what I actually did. But when I thought about it I've done a lot: I created the society's Twitter account, organised team meetings, took pictures for social media and liaised with the societies office regularly. Everyone on the committee has worked so hard and I'm proud of them as well as myself. I thought being on the committee would be a minor part of my CV, yet the reality is that I have gained so much from this experience that I do not know where I would be without it all.

Performances

Being on committee meant there were quite a few performance opportunities that came up...and I'm happy to say I took part in the majority. Some highlights included:

Diwali Lights Switch On - WOW just WOW. Performing in front of 40,000 spectators on Leicester's famous Golden Mile was one of the most surreal experiences I have ever had. I was so pumped to perform that when it was all over, I wanted to go on stage and do it all again.

Diwali Day - This was even bigger!! Performing at Sabras Radio, Cossington Park (in front of 40,000 again), and finishing off with an interview with BBC Asian Network...this was a wilder ride but one I still loved.

Investiture of DMU Chancellor - Having the opportunity to perform at such a prestigious event that happens only every 10 years was a huge honour. It was a hectic, and at some points frustrating day, but the team got through it and we had a blast.

Sitara - For me personally, it was my best performance of the year and I had so much fun!! Our friends ADS were also very welcoming too :)

Naina 2016 -  Of course this was making the list. Our final performance together as a committee, it's been wonderful dancing alongside them. Hopefully we'll all get to do it once more. PS. Our society members crushed it & Deewani Mastani was stunning!!!

What made all these performances so special were the people that I shared the experience with, and honestly I couldn't imagine doing it without any of them :) Here are a few I missed out:
  • Vishram Ghar was even better than last year;
  • The societies first ever wedding performance - you girls killed it *hair flick* *too good for Mitz*
  • Graduation which didn't work out to well although our members were still awesome!!

Just Chill Chill, Just Chill

Naturally, being on the committee and with so many performances to rehearse for meant us committee ended up having A LOT of chill time together. And you know what, I've loved every single minute of it!

I have to admit, our rehearsals went something like this: "rehearse the routine once *take 20 min break* - repeat 5 times". Ok we did rehearse seriously too but this happened a lot.

And not just rehearsals, everything turned into valuable chill time - our weekly classes and even team meetings (they were always more of a bonding experience for me anyway). Chill time isn't a bad thing though, and I've gotten to know the other committee members in the process.

Coming early to class and then staying back after, and also going around talking to our members, its the little things that count. We've had some awesome socials too, Fatcats, bowling, Daru and of course #FiyaFiya (one for the committee loooool). So many jokes and too much fun, these are the things that seriously made my year.

Committee 2015/2016

There were 7 of us on this years committee, and they have all been fantastic. Experiences aren't just about the experience itself, but also about who you shared these experiences with, and I want to say a massive thank you to the committee members for making my experience this year all the more memorable!!

Aashni & Manisha - Our outgoing President and VP. Thank you so much for all you have taught me and the rest of the team. You have both been superb in leading this society in the right direction and are both truly going to be missed. Aashni, you are too funny (banter on point), you always bring them crazy/fun vibes to dance and I admire your leadership a lot. Manisha, you're always so bubbly and energetic that dance is odd when your not there, your half selfies are always on fleek, and you are such a nice person, the quality I admire most about you. I wish you both the best for the future, you'll be great at whatever you decide to pursue :) Oh and you have to come visit next year!!

Varsha - At the start, out of all the committee I knew you the least as we didn't talk much in first year. Now that I do you know you, I wish I had gotten to know you earlier :) You're actually a joker, always make me laugh and you're an awesome person to chill with. I honestly can't imagine "committee life" without you, so thank you so much!! PS. I know you're going to make an amazing President next year :)

Aashni - Lol, just lol. I love the way you can put up with my banter, in person and on the group chat. You give me to much jokes and you've made dance so fun this year. Your funny moments always make me and the group smile..."I don't drink" (not with that glass if wine mate). You've been amazing handling events this year I honestly don't know how you do it. And not just events, you've contributed in so many other ways you should be so proud.

Khushi & Akruti - Without the both of you I literally can't imagine what would've happened with dance this year. You've choreographed some amazing routines...Deewani Mastani was just too good!! Khushi, I've seen your confidence improve which is so good to see. You're such a nice person which I love, and the more I've got to know you, I can't believe how funny you actually are!! Akruti, you're one of my best friends I've made at dance, and this year that friendship has just grown. You're a wonderful person who watches way to much TV lol, but you're always someone I can count on to have fun with when we're together.

I could honestly go on and on but nah its alright dw :) #BollywoodFamily

Members

Ok so I can't not talk about our awesome members. At the end of the day, whatever us committee do, whatever fun we have means nothing if guys aren't enjoying dance. From what I've heard you all had a great time which is so nice to hear. It's been wonderful getting to know you all, you're all so different and fun in your own ways.

It was so great to have another boy coming regularly to dance, you just need that bro company #ManLikeHarsh . Seeing Latisha's confidence improve and getting to know her has been great; It's so cute how Gaia always say cute haha....and she's great to be around; and of course Maya my bestie, dance is always better when she's around :) I've mentioned a few but it's been wonderful getting to know you all. You all make dance class so much fun and have helped make my year so memorable, so thank you :D

Legacy

It was important to me that this year we made our mark as a committee, that we took DMU Bollywood Dance in the right direction for it to keep on growing. From all we've achieved this year, I can definitely say that we made that mark.

We took part in many other performances, from the Investiture of DMU Chancellor to UOL's Asian Dance Society's Sitara, from Graduation to the society's first ever Wedding Performance...it's been a great year. We also had the honour of receiving the "Most Improved Society" award in term 1 at the Vice Chancellors Society's Dinner.

Oh and we finally got society t-shirts (merchandise is actually the best). There are so many plans for next year and I know the new committee will keep on achieving :)

WE LOVE SELFIES!!!

One thing we ALL love to do is take pictures, and we have LOTS of them :) Here are some "Honest Pictures" to finish off...

Too much love for these amazing people....Forever and Always #LaDanceFamilia
