Disney is Set for Box Office Domination in 2019…and Years to Come!
As you will have heard, and should have definitely seen (at
least 100 times), Disney released the first teaser trailer for its upcoming
“live action” The Lion King film, due for release in summer 2019. After 24
hours the trailer was viewed over 200 million times – only Avengers: Infinity
War’s trailer garnered more views when released (another Disney owned film).
But it’s not just The Lion King for Disney in 2019, for their slate next year is
the envy of all other studios. Let’s take a look at what’s in store:
·
Captain Marvel
·
Dumbo
·
Avengers 4
·
Aladdin
·
Toy Story 4
·
The Lion King
·
Frozen 2
·
Star Wars: Episode IX
I mean honestly, which of those films is NOT going to make
money? NONE. Ok I think if Dumbo doesn’t hit critically it might semi-flop, but
that’s it. It’s safe to say $1 billion is guaranteed for at least half of those
films, with Avengers 4 and Lion King possibly in the running to gross $2
billion.
This astonishing film slate is the culmination of smart
business decisions and years of hard work – and as fans we’re the ones who
really win. From the moment Bob Iger took the helm at Disney, he knew that
acquiring successful business and merging them with Disney would secure the
company’s future. Over the course of the past decade, Iger has seen over the
acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, and is currently overseeing the
acquisition of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment assets. In this day
and age, IP is king, and whilst other studios are scrambling to acquire the
next big franchise, Disney sitting pretty with the biggest grin of all.
What really sets Disney apart from other studios is how
consistent the quality of their films are. Warner Bros and Universal have many
profitable and well recognised franchises/IP, however the quality of films they
produce is inconsistent e.g. Wonder Woman vs Pan; Despicable Me 2 vs Jurassic
World. Disney on the other hand, barring
a few films, consistently produce quality films which in turn helps them be so
dominant at the box office. Black Panther, Infinity War, Zootopia, Big Hero 6,
Jungle Book – the list just goes on. For Disney, it’s one financial and
critical hit after another.
Disney is blessed to have a catalogue of characters and
stories which audiences have come to love and adore over the course of multiple
generations. We don’t know many specifics in terms of films for 2020 and
beyond, however we can safely say Disney’s film division will be producing one
box office hit after another. In my opinion, Disney’s 2019 is going to be the
biggest box office year for any film studio to date…with the scariest thing
being I can see that record being broken soon after. What slate of films could
top 2019? It’s hard to say, but if any studio can do it, Walt Disney Studios
certainly can!
