6 MCU Films You Must Watch Before Avengers: Endgame

Can you even believe it? It feels like a lifetime of waiting but Avengers: Endgame is almost upon us. As the culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far (which includes 21 films), Endgame will act as the finale for the “Infinity Saga”. We’ve been privileged to see so many characters bought to life on the big screen, with multiple plot points and emotional character arcs, it’s been a truly amazing journey. But as with all journey’s, they must come to an end, and like it or not…“we’re in the endgame now”.

Going into Endgame, the films you 100% must have seen before is Avengers: Infinity War, and it’ll allow you to have a great experience watching Endgame. But if you want to have the most fulfilling experience possible, I highly recommend watching (or re-watching) a few of the key films in the MCU before going to watch the finale.

Here are my 6 films you should watch before seeing Avengers: Endgame

Iron Man

The one that started it all. The first film in the MCU (before it was even known as that) gave audiences a comic book film that hadn’t been seen before. It’s action-packed, tonally dark, and there’s lots of humour too. Iron Man represents the very best of what an MCU film is all about. It introduces Tony Stark/Iron Man who has been the MCU’s lead character, and watching this film will make you appreciate the extraordinary arc the character goes through in the series of films. It started with Iron Man, and rightfully so he’s going to play a big role in ending it.

The Avengers

A monumental moment in the MCU and cinema. For the first time, we got to witness multiple superhero’s coming together in the ultimate ensemble film of the time. The Avengers was ground breaking, and was better than anything we could have imagined. In preparation for Endgame, this film will be a fantastic watch, giving you an idea of what an Avengers film is all about.

Guardians of the Galaxy

This one’s a bit odd…not the film, just the characters in it. This film was a refreshing change from what we’d seen previously, and introduces us to the Guardians of the Galaxy. Watching this will remind you of the dynamics of the group, especially because Rocket and Nebula are in Endgame. The film is fun, fun, and more fun. It also gives us our first explanation for the infinity stones, which are crucial part of this entire series.

Captain America: Civil War

This is one of my favourite films in the MCU. It’s the best ensemble film in the series (yes better than Infinity War), and is a key chapter in the films for the state of the Avengers, the relationship between Tony and Steve, and gives us one of the best action sequences in any of the films (airport scene). It’s a must watch to feel the emotional weight of Tony and Steve’s reunion in Endgame.

Thor: Ragnarok
Who knew Thor could be so funny? Again, one of my favourite MCU films (this film is so re-watchable), sees Thor and Hulk team up with a few new faces to take down Hela – Goddess of Death. It introduces us to Valkyrie, Korg, and Meek (all likely to appear in Endgame), whilst showing all that Thor has been through so you can understand his mental state in Infinity War, and subsequently Endgame.

Avengers: Infinity War
I don’t think I need to say much about this one…Thanos, Infinity stones, gauntlet, “why is Gamora”, and Thor should’ve aimed for the head. As the film which Endgame directly follows on from, it’s a must see. A true cinematic spectacle.

In an ideal world, I’d recommend seeing more films (Ant Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel, etc). But to make life a little simpler, the above 6 films should have you covered. I highly recommend watching these 6, it will make this final experience every bit more satisfying. Avengers: Endgame is in cinemas this Thursday 25th April.
