Avengers: Endgame Is Officially Top Of The World
For a while it felt as though the film would fall just
short, but now its official…Avengers: Endgame has become the highest grossing
film of all time. The smash hit MCU finale finally passed Avatar’s decade long
total to reach $2.79bn this past weekend, capping off what has been an insane
year for Marvel Studios.
In Avengers: Endgame, we have witnessed box office history
which we will not see matched for a very long time, and probably never to this
scale and magnitude. The buzz for Endgame was monumental! In the first 2 weeks
of its release, you couldn’t escape the Endgame…it was truly a cultural phenomenon.
Smashing the worldwide box office opening weekend record by a staggering $500m,
it’s hard to believe we will see these types’ numbers again.
It’s a fitting testament to the amazing work everyone at
Marvel Studios has done over the last 11 years, with Endgame being a worthy
film for the top mantle. With such a massive opening weekend ($357m in North
America and $1.2bn worldwide), a lot of us had assumed Endgame would stroll to
the no.1 all-time spot, but instead it ended up being a close call, slowly
chipping away each weekend.
In all the praise Marvel should get for this feet however, let’s
also take a minute to appreciate the magnitude of what Avatar and James Cameron
had achieved a decade ago. Cinema was very different back then, where
opening weekends weren’t the be all end all, when ticket prices were cheaper, and
when China wasn’t a powerhouse - Avatar defied the odds, opening to $77m but
going onto gross an astonishing $2.78bn. The film had ridiculously low box
office drops week to week, and for me most impressively, grossed $1.825bn
internationally…excluding China!
But all good things must come to an end, and Avengers: Endgame,
Marvel, and Disney now reign supreme. What they have achieved in unprecedented, but is nothing short of what they deserve. There are so many possibilities for the
MCU going forward, some of which I will cover soon in my blog. But for now let
us celebrate and appreciate the magnitude of what has just happened…Avengers:
Endgame writes itself into box office history, and all we can do is stand and applaud.
Congratulations Marvel, Disney, and Kevin Feige.
