Avengers: Endgame Obliterates Box Office Records

This weekend gone was a historic moment for cinema, and a financial utopia for Marvel/Disney. Avengers: Endgame released in all major markets worldwide over the past weekend. The box office numbers came in and OH MY GOD CAN YOU EVEN BELIEVE IT? Avengers: Endgame opened to a staggering $1.2bn worldwide, shattering the previous record by a whopping $500m. Just let your mind comprehend this, over its first 5 days of release, Endgame made more money than films like Minions, Civil War, The Dark Night (and I could go on…) did in their ENTIRE theatrical run.

The entire film industry (and myself as you can tell) are in shock at just how well Endgame has performed, obliterating box office records in so many major markets. As the box office numbers came in over the weekend, estimates just went up and up and up. There was no stopping the Avengers on their path to glory. The financial success the film has already had is a testament to the franchise which Kevin Feige and the wider creative teams at Marvel and Disney have created…the Marvel Cinematic Universe is unlike anything we have ever seen, and the numbers just prove it.

Let’s take a closer look at the numbers, and the notable records Avengers: Endgame demolished:
  • Biggest Worldwide Opening – Made $1.2bn in its first weekend (previous record $640m).
  • Fastest to a Billion – Reached $1bn in sales in just 5 days (previous record 11 days).
  • Domestic Opening (North America) – Made $357m opening weekend (previous record $258m)
  • Domestic Daily Totals (North America) – $157m on Friday (including $60m in Thursday previews), $109m on Saturday, and $90 on Sunday
  • Biggest China Opening – Made $330m in its 5-day launch, including $107.8m on opening day (a record too).
  • Highest Opening Weekend – The film broke the opening weekend records in 44 markets including Australia, China, Korea, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Spain and UK/Ireland. It also set records for highest single-day gross in 29 markets of these markets.
Honestly, I did not expect the film to do this well. I had predicted the film would make approx. $950 worldwide opening weekend (which would still have been a record), but nothing to this scale. There were theatre chains in North America open for 72 hours straight, whilst my local cinemas in Leicester had 80% of their screens showing Endgame, such was the demand to see this film.

For me, there were 3 reasons why the film has made so much money opening weekend:

1.    Hype – as the culmination of the MCU, everyone was super-hyped for this film (congrats to Disney’s marketing team)

2.    The need to avoid spoilers – with such a big film, and major storylines in play, a lot of people wanted to be in know as soon as possible to avoid spoilers.

3.    Superb film-making across the MCU – what Marvel has accomplished with this franchise is unprecedented, and the success all comes down to great story-telling executed by film makers. It’s the reason why there is so much love for the film and its characters.
There are now those who say Avengers: Endgame will now go on to break Avatar’s all time box office record of $2.8bn. I personally think it won’t break the record, mainly due to the competition Endgame has coming up in May (Pikachu, Godzilla, etc). But one thing we’re all certain of now is that this film has become a generational phenomenon. This is a once in a generation type event film, and we may never see this again for decades to come.

Part of the journey is the end”…
