Frozen 2 - Film Review

Frozen was (and still is) a phenomenon that Disney weren't expecting to be as successful as it was. The film captured the imagination of a whole generation of kids and parents alike, yet we've had to wait a whole 6 years for a sequel. It's a long time to wait, but for someone who has seen the film, it was 100% worth it!

Frozen 2 surpassed all of my expectations, full of charm, humour, love and most importantly a fantastic story (with characters of equal measure). I liked the first film, but was in the camp that it was overhyped (the songs were banging though), so I wasn't expecting a sequel with so much depth and finesse. The story is the highlight, darker and more mature, building a better picture of the Erenadale's place in the world, answering questions we never knew we wanted answering...all whilst doing some immense character building in the process.

One of the films first songs is about "change", something Olaf isn't keen on, but it resonates throughout the film as the characters journey into the unknown (pun intended), growing in so many ways as the story unfolds. Anna is still a little childish, Elsa's powers still scare her, and Kristoff is still a hopeless (but loveable) hero...but each one of them (and Olaf too) grows in maturity without lessening the reasons why we fell in the love with them!

Elsa in particular goes on an amazing journey of self-discovery, transforming emotionally and physically (her new look is amazing) into an even better and more badass princess! The film doubles down on the theme of sisterly love and it shows in spades, with the love Anna and Elsa have for each other being so beautiful! BOTH Elsa and Anna are fantastic role models for kids everywhere.

I wouldn't say the songs are as good or memorable compared to the first film (as I expected to be fair), but still move the story along in a nice way. Elsa has an amazing song in the latter half of the film - Show Yourself - which is better than "Into The Unknown" which was all over the marketing. Kristoff also has a solo which is super cringe to watch but funny too.

The animation at times was jaw-dropping, especially with all the scenes involving Elsa and her magic. It is such a powerful tool and tells a story all on its own. AND THE WATER ACTUALLY LOOKED REAL!! Perhaps that's why it took 6 years to make the sequel?

Olaf had the funniest scene in the film by far, along with a whole lot of other laugh out loud moments. I wasn't expecting to be as ammused as I was, but I had a grin on my face at all the right times, and the humour in general is one reason this film surpasses the original!

I'd suspect if you're reading this you're going to see the film, but if you were like me and felt so so about the first...give this a try, I doubt it'll disappoint!
