Godzilla, Lion King, Pikachu & More - Summer 2019 Film Preview

It’s that time of the year again…the summer movie season is officially underway! Apart from the good weather (sometimes), late nights, and BBQ’s, one of the best things about summer is the sheer amount of major film releases, with each studio bringing their best to capitalise on more people going to cinema’s.

The summer movie season traditionally lasts from May till August (although Avengers: Endgame may count even as an April release), and there are plenty of blockbusters to see this summer 2019. Here are my picks of the films to look out for this summer movie season (based on UK release dates)…

MAY
We’re off with a bang, with Godzilla: King of the Monsters (29/05) being my standout for May. The “monster-verse” is well and truly underway, and the trailers have set-up an epic showdown between Godzilla, King Ghidorah, and all the other “titans”. Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (10/05) is the other highlight, and with the marketing being top-notch, the film looks set to capitalise on the success of Pokémon Go. Other notable releases include John Wick Chapter 3 (15/05), Aladdin (22/05), Rocketman (24/05), and Secret Life of Pets 2 (24/05), which - being honest - looks like it’s not going to perform as well as the first one.

JUNE
Moving into June, we have Dark Phoenix (05/06). I’ve been a fan of the new X-Men films under Fox (First Class is so underrated) so I’ve always been excited for Dark Phoenix, even though rumours have all pointed towards it being a disaster. Anyway, I’m just glad I have a chance to witness Michael Fassbender portray Magneto one last time (he was the best part of X-Men: Apocalypse). Pixar are bringing their best (literally) with Toy Story 4 (21/06), and whilst the trailers haven’t really done it for me, I’m confident the film is going to be nothing short of amazing. Other notable releases include Men in Black: International (14/06), Child’s Play (21/06), and Annabelle: Creation (28/06).

JULY

Spider-Man: Far From Home (02/07) kicks of July and looks set for an impressive box office haul. As the first MCU film after Avengers: Endgame, it will deal with the aftermath of those events, whilst propelling Spider-Man to a whole new level of awesome in the process (see my thoughts on the latest trailer here). And then there’s a little film called The Lion King (19/07). Disney’s highly anticipated remake (of arguably the best animated film of all time) looks set to be a box office juggernaut. With a phenomenal cast and Jon Favreau at the helm, we should be in for a real treat. Anna (05/07) also looks an intriguing spy/action thriller (Luc Besson directs).

AUGUST

Finishing off the summer season is an unusually impressive line-up for August. First there’s Fast & Furious spin-off Hobbs & Shaw (02/08). Although I’ve not seen any Fast & Furious film (I’m sorry ok), the trailers for this spin-off have looked immense and completely sold me. The we have Quieten Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (14/08). The Tarantino flick has a stellar cast (Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, etc) and I have a feeling it will topple Django Unchained as my favourite film from the acclaimed director.

With so many films to look forward to, summer 2019 looks set to be a blast!
