Top 10 Films of Summer 2019 - Box Office Prediction

The summer movie season is now here, with so many high-profile films set for release. Yesterday I put of my film preview of summer 2019, so today I thought it would only be right to do my summer 2019 box office prediction. Avengers: Endgame might be eating up the box office, but more competition in the next few weeks means there’s still plenty of money to go around.

I’m basing my list on which UK releases, between May & August (Endgame being the exception), make the most money worldwide. So without further or do, here is my box office prediction for the top 10 films in summer 2019...

#1 Avengers: Endgame - Box Office Estimate - $2.9bn

Fairly obvious pick for my number 1, Endgame has broken so many box office records already, it will definitely top Avatar, however will just miss out on that $3bn mark.

#2 The Lion King - Box Office Estimate - $1.4bn
With no real competition the week before or after, The Lion King could explode if reviews are great. Beauty and the Beast (2017) topped $1.2bn worldwide, and as The Lion King is arguably the most beloved animated film of all time, exceeding $1.2bn is definitely in play.

#3 Spider-Man: Far From Home - Box Office Estimate - $1.05bn
After watching the new trailer, I’m sure Far From Home will crack a billion dollars. As the final film of phase 3 in the MCU (and dealing with the aftermath of Endgame), Far From Home will do great numbers…because everyone loves Spider-Man right?

#4 Toy Story 4 - Box Office Estimate - $980m
With such a strong brand (both Toy Story and Pixar), this film will do great. I was so close to putting it in the billion dollar club (Toy Story 3 did $1.06 in 2010), but with the trailers not working for me, coupled with no one really asking for this sequel, I think it will just miss out!

#5 Hobbs & Shaw - Box Office Estimate - $950m
The Fast & Furious franchise has made so much money in recent times (especially outside the US), so I’m confident its first spin-off film will continue the trend. The Rock and Jason Statham’s chemistry looks great.

#6 Secret Life of Pets 2 - Box Office Estimate – $780m
A year ago I was certain this sequel would crack a billion (Secret Life of Pets did $875m in 2016), but I’ve barely heard any hype on social media or in person for the film. Unfortunately, I think Universal will be disappointed with their marketing efforts on this one.

#7 Pokémon: Detective Pikachu - Box Office Estimate – $740m
The marketing has been great, and many people are excited for this film, capitalising of Pokémon Go’s success. The reviews so far have mostly been great, although it does skew more towards Pokémon fans than general audiences.

#8 Aladdin - Box Office Estimate - $710m
Disney’s second live-action remake of 2019, Aladdin looks set to be a hit. $700m may look little compared to The Lion King, but the two films are completely unique in their own ways. Disney will be happy with this number, although it may come in below as competition is strong.

#9 Godzilla: King of the Monsters - Box Office Estimate – $670m
My most anticipated film of the summer, I’m hoping this film makes more, but this estimate is in line with expectations, and slightly higher than the previous instalment. All the trailers have been amazing so I’m hoping Godzilla can be really leggy #LongLiveTheKing

#10 Rocketman - Box Office Estimate – $600m
I was so close to leaving this out, but this is my wildcard. Bohemian Rhapsody's showed how well these music biopics can play. If the reviews are great and audiences love it, I can see Rocketman playing most of this summer.

Honourable mentions go to Men In Black: International (just missed out but wouldn’t be surprised if it makes the top 10), Dark Phoenix, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
